Dr. Joe Beasley: Atlanta Civil Rights Icon

The Atlanta City Council reports on the passing of Dr. Joe Beasley, a significant civil rights icon and an advocate for human rights, who passed away at the age of 88 on December 9.

Dr. Beasley rose from humble beginnings to become a leader in civil rights within the United States and internationally. His efforts in Georgia were crucial in amplifying the voices of the Black population, ensuring Grady Memorial Hospital continued to serve Black communities in Atlanta, and advocating for voting and economic rights across several nations in Africa and South America.

His work facilitated the growth of generations of leaders in Atlanta, who will carry forward his mission for equality in civil and human rights. The impact of Dr. Beasley’s advocacy will be felt for years to come, as will his deeply felt absence.
